IPL & Your Skin Tone
Venus Versa IPL is generally suitable for Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV, which includes:
Type I: Very fair skin, always burns, never tans
Type II: Fair skin, usually burns, tans minimally
Type III: Medium/light olive skin, sometimes burns, tans gradually
Type IV: Olive/light brown skin, rarely burns, tans easily
For skin types V–VI (darker brown to deep skin tones), IPL may carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation, uneven results or excessive heat injuries. However, each case is individual, and suitability depends on your specific skin concerns and the settings used.
For Darker Skin types we have other treatments that work safely and can discuss these
with you at a consultation.

How is my skin assessed?
IPL is suitable for many skin types however not everyone is a suitable candidate.
Before your treatment, your Registered Nurse will assess your skin during a personalized
consultation. We’ll consider your skin tone, concerns, medical history, any current
medications and treatment goals to ensure IPL is safe and appropriate for you.
Is IPL suitable for all skin tones?
IPL is generally best suited to lighter to medium skin tones with visible pigmentation or redness. For individuals with deeper skin tones, IPL may carry a higher risk of uneven pigmentation, so suitability is assessed carefully during consultation. Treatment settings are tailored to each person’s skin type to help minimise risks and support the best possible cosmetic outcome.
What should be avoided before and after an IPL photofacial?
Clients are generally advised to avoid excessive sun exposure, tanning beds, and active skincare ingredients like retinol for at least two weeks before treatment. After the session, sun protection is essential—this includes applying high-SPF sunscreen daily and limiting time in direct sunlight. Practitioners will provide specific aftercare guidance to help support skin recovery and promote the best possible cosmetic outcome.
Can IPL treatments be combined with other skin therapies?
Yes. IPL treatments may be incorporated into a broader skin-care plan alongside services such as collagen-induction or resurfacing. When coordinated carefully, a combined approach can help improve the appearance of tone, texture and overall skin quality. Treatment sequencing is planned to allow the skin adequate time to recover and adapt between sessions, supporting a safe and effective experience.
